A trip to the salon

Honey and I were lucky enough to photograph this beautifully styled shoot last week at Tiki on Ackers hair salon. Karen from Carbine Avenue always does an amazing job styling and this shoot was no exception. When we walked through the doors, it felt like we had travelled back in time! Every detail had been considered… the stunning clothes were supplied by Vintage Rose, the make-up looks were created by Balance Beauty and Makeup Artistry and the amazing hair doos were of course styled by the ladies at Tiki. Monique, Olive, Michelle and Cristie were such a pleasure to shoot. Thank you to everyone involved for a really fun day!

Techie Info:
Tiki hair salon has big glass windows along the front on the building that offered great natural light, but it does drop off quickly towards the back of the salon. We decided to introduce a studio light to fill the darker areas with light – one large soft box. When using studio lights or flash, glass and mirrors can become a photographer’s worst nightmare as the reflection of the light can show up on the surface and ruin a shot. We managed this by adjusting the light to be as high as possible on the stand and quite far back from the scene – this allowed the light to be higher than the window and to bounce around rather than be directional on the subjects. After testing the light, we were happy with the studio light but disappointed that the natural light was being overpowered by the flash and getting lost. This was managed by adjusting the camera settings and upping the ISO to let more natural light in  – perfect!
