Creative collaboration – product photos

Having the chance to work alongside another creative professional is a real gift because it makes you realise there are other people in the world as crazy as you are! Crazy because it is our job to notice the smallest details and agonise if something is too big or small in the frame, should we leave this in or crop it out? It’s all these small decisions when added up that make a big difference to the end result. It probably isn’t the best analogy, but its like saying to an accountant it’s ok if the decimal point is in the wrong spot, it will all work out in the end… well it often doesn’t. Paying attention to the small details and deciding what to often ‘leave out’ is what a creative professional is good at and what you pay them for.
I have worked alongside Karen the stylist from Carbine Avenue and Confetti Mag for several years now and we make a great team. The longer you spend working with someone the more honest you can be and the more your styles align. We recently worked together on a styled shoot for The Seventh Duchess Tea and we both thoroughly enjoyed working with a simple and elegant scene using natural light. The props chosen for the shoot were based around the the Christmas ‘theme’, the ingredients in the tea and colours of the tin and label.

Working with a stylist has really opened my eyes to another level of detail that I was unaware of even though it’s my job to notice the small things. Often the roll of a stylist is discredited in the planning of the shoot as additional expense that can be left off, but no big commercial shoot would be what it is without lots of time and energy spent creating a ‘style’. Style isn’t an accident, it is created by people and only some people have the skill – I know I don’t!
If you haven’t had the chance to check out Confetti Mag be sure to, as it is a great example of a team of creative professionals working together well – Teegan (Verve), Karen (Carbine Avenue), Honey (Insight Creative).
